Our Story

Moʻolelo

Mālama Project, Hawaiʻi's first collegiate recovery program, was founded in 2016, with a grant through Transforming Youth Recovery.

Mālama Project seeks to provide a space where all students in recovery can feel safe, accepted, understood, and empowered. Cultural sensitivity and congruent practices, grounded in traditional Hawaiian values, are embedded in Mālama Projects practice. Mālama Project embraces all forms of recovery and students at any point in their journey.

Mission

To perpetuate a thriving collegiate recovery program, empowering students to be resilient, achieve academic success, and maintain

overall wellbeing through Mālama ʻĀina, Mālama kekahi i kekahi, and Mālama pono ʻia.

Vision

Provide a safe, supportive ʻohana for students by providing culturally grounded programming and structure for all students, impacted by substance use, attending the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa.

Values

Mālama ʻĀina (care of the land) To care for the land will provide a reciprocal process of healing for our students while proving a sense of place.

Mālama Kekahi i Kekahi (Care for one another) Recovery is not a pathway that is walked alone.

Mālama Pono ʻia (to be well) We have to strength to sustain our wellness, sometimes we need help to sustain when triggers are.
